AHG: Ancestor Detector Badge

Izzie completed and earned 11 American Heritage Girls' badges during the fall.

After we spoke about how God created everyone to be beautifully and uniquely different, we read several related books and she drew an amazing self-portrait

This was a perfect introduction to her Ancestor Detector badge.

He first requirement was to create a page about herself.  She decided to use pictures from each birthday.

In addition, she had to include pictures of family members and create a family tree.

Her second requirement was to interview the oldest member of her family, which is her Great-Pop.

Interview Questions:
  • When and where were you born?  West Virginia in 1930.
  • Tell me about your childhood.   I was born and raised on a farm.  I was one of thirteen children.  My father was a coal miner and my mother stayed home with the children.  I enlisted in the US Air Force at the age of eighteen.
  • How did you meet your wife?  I met Great-Gran while stationed in London, England.  We were soon married in England.  We came back to America on a boat, while she was pregnant with morning sickness.  It was a long journey back.
  • Tell me about your children.  We have two children.

Pop and Gran were married for 60 years.

Her third requirement was to discover and play a game from the past with a friend.  She decided to play Hopscotch with her friends.

The last requirement was to find out what her first and last names mean and to print out her family coat of arms.

Izzie really enjoyed looking through family photos and learning about her family history, while completing the Ancestor Detector badge.
